The Evaluation Tells us…

Although many interdisciplinary collaborations are not successful, this team not only enjoyed working together, but gained new perspectives by interacting with people outside their own disciplinary fields.

For the graduate student members of the leadership team, working on an interdisciplinary team helped them see that the basic knowledge they study in their research labs has real-world applications. According to a chemistry graduate student, “I think sometimes we get stuck in such a rut with our research groups and we’re always talking about the same thing. It’s like a breath of fresh air almost to collaborate with new people and learn some new things and definitely applications to industry.”

For the faculty members of the leadership team, collaborating with others on an education-focused project allowed them to learn about new teaching strategies, which they then implemented in their classrooms. After participating in the ChANgE Chem project, for example, an engineering professor integrated more open-ended problems into his class. The faculty members felt they specifically benefitted from cross-disciplinary conversations with colleagues. According to one team member, “I find that a lot of faculty don’t spend a lot of time just talking about what can we do to make things better. Maybe let’s talk about it together. What can we do as a whole? […] Through this project I feel like I get that need met, and so I really like it.”
